This paper, adopting a comparative approach, addresses the issue of the possibility of speaking about God in the thought of Eriugena and Philo Alexandria. These two thinkers, within the context of the Abrahamic religions and under the influence of the Neoplatonic tradition, on the one hand consider apophatic theology to be the basis for knowledge of God, while on the other hand they adhere to the necessity of affirming the positive attributes transmitted in the sacred texts. This tension between the inability to describe the divine essence and the necessity of employing affirmative language is the focal point of the present paper. Therefore, using a hermeneutic-comparative analytical method and based on direct study of the primary works of the two thinkers, the authors first reconstruct their theological foundations and then analyze and compare each thinker’s approach to confronting the conflict between negation and affirmation. The findings indicate that Eriugena makes apophatic theology the foundation of his theology; however, at the same time, relying on Scripture, he also interprets affirmative concepts such as existence, the cause of causes, simplicity, and pure goodness. Philo also, following the Platonic tradition, regards God as beyond human conception and considers negation to be the path to understanding transcendence; The results of the study indicate that both thinkers resolve the conflict between negation and affirmation by distinguishing between the transcendent essence and the immanent God; the difference being that Eriugena, as a Christian, highlights the preeminent role of Jesus Christ in the ascent of the soul.
