Islamic scholars explore the concept of signification, in the discussion of "Mabahith Alfaz" within the principles of jurisprudence. While their understanding of signification differs from the notion of reference in the philosophy of language, they nonetheless address overlapping issues between the two disciplines. They examine how a word signifies meaning, explaining that it involves the mental transition from the perception of the word to the perception of its meaning. One of the issues in the philosophy of language that, despite multiple efforts, does not reach an accepted answer is the issue of the reference of proper names. One of the important theories in this regard is Kripke's theory, which has faced objections. However, through the method of comparison and the use of approaches from Islamic scholars, a defensible theory can be achieved. This paper aims to clarify the signification of proper names. The objective of this paper is to employ the approaches of Islamic scholars via a comparative analytic method to resolve the problem of proper name signification and to attain a defensible theory. The findings of this research indicate that the theory of Sheikh Larijani, termed “Reference to Quiddity” -formulated within the context of explicating and critiquing Kripke’s theory-provides rigorous responses to the raised objections and presents a comprehensive theory. It must be noted that his view, whilst indebted to the discourses of the scholars of Uṣūl, involves such substantial modifications that it may be regarded as a novel theory.
